It just stopped in traffic and would not restart. I had been planning to replace the distributor so I went ahead and did that. I have 12 volts going to the distributor and verified that I have a good ground between the engine and chassis. The timing is right. The HEI is a unitized distributor with magnetic reluctors to trigger its internal control module and an ignition coil built into the large-diameter cap. Note that small-block and big-block Chevy distributors are interchangeable.
